Call for proposals

For many individuals and communities in our changing and globalized world, multilingualism has become the norm. The theme of LTRC 2020, “Assessment in multilingual contexts” attempts to tackle the many issues and challenges that we face as assessors of language ability in multilingual environments. Assessing this construct across multiple languages, for example, and doing so equitably, fairly and responsibly, is a complex institutional challenge; assessing the language competence of multilingual individuals is a similarly complicated undertaking. It requires not only test adaptation, but also innovation in test design, and novel views on how to tackle that challenge. How do language testers respond to the myriad of theoretical and empirical approaches that currently attempt to address these issues? How do language teachers cope with the assessment of multiple languages present in their classrooms? Why is it challenging for test designers to define the construct, to assess and to score language assessments in multilingual contexts? How do immigration officials or administrators, and immigrants and newcomers handle institutional language demands? How do we deal with high status languages that dominate those of lower status in institutional contexts? And what does all this mean for the assessment of language ability?

The aim of LTRC 2020 is to bring together researchers from around the world to address critical themes in assessment in multilingual environments. We do not wish to limit potential contributions in any way with the few examples we have given here; we aim to have a diverse set of approaches to the models and the policies that may be adopted to solve this complex issue, and we therefore welcome a range of approaches for discussion at the conference. We also welcome papers and presentations on other topics in language assessment.

Presentation categories

LTRC 2020 invites proposals for the presentation types listed below.  All proposals should be no longer than 500 words, in addition to a 250-word summary, except where noted below. The 250-word summary will appear in the conference program book.

Research papers

Research papers can be either empirical or theoretical. These presentation slots are 20 minutes in length followed by a ten-minute discussion. In addition to the discussion of results, empirical papers should have a clear rationale and methodology. Theoretical research papers should debate critical issues pertaining to the theme of the conference. Proposals not accepted as research papers may be considered as posters or works-in-progress.

Each proposal for a paper (not exceeding 500 words) must be accompanied by a summary of 250 words. The 250-word summary will appear in the conference program book.


Symposia address a coherent theme related to theory, research or practice, and they are 120 minutes in length. It is envisaged that the symposia sessions will raise issues related to the conference theme and allow presenters and audience to share ideas to find answers to the issues raised. These sessions can include up to four presenters, a moderator and an independent discussant. The symposium proposal should be 500 words in length with a clear topic and objective. Titles and summaries of the papers of these symposia should be 250 words each.  The 250-word summary will appear in the conference program book.

Demonstrations (Demos)

Demonstrations usually show how technology has been innovatively applied to assessments. This may involve new means of: designing and developing assessments; delivering them; analyzing oral or written texts; scoring of assessments; understanding assessment behaviors (e.g., eye-tracking studies); or other uses of technology in assessment. Presenters should be prepared to showcase their work through screen shots and/or actual demonstrations. Demos are 20 minutes in length, followed by 10 minutes for questions and comments from the audience. The proposal of a maximum of 500 words in length should describe the substantive goals of the presentation, outline how the demo will proceed, and discuss any implications for language assessment, and be accompanied by a 250-word summary.  The 250-word summary will appear in the conference program book.


Poster proposals should be no more than 500 words in length, accompanied by a summary of 250 words. Posters will be displayed during the timetabled session in the program, where presenters need to be present, discuss their work, and answer questions from the audience. Posters are a good opportunity for those involved in test development projects, new tests and technological innovations to present their contributions to language assessment.  The 250-word summary will appear in the conference program book.

Works-in-Progress (WIPs)

Researchers currently working on ongoing research projects can submit them as a work-in-progress presentations. This session offers good opportunities for the presentation of research in progress or research that is being planned. Presenters discuss their projects with small groups of participants and receive comments and suggestions on how best to proceed. Proposals are a maximum of 500 words in length, accompanied by a summary of 250 words.  The 250-word summary will appear in the conference program book.

Proposal Deadline: The call for proposals will close on Tuesday, 15 October 2019 at 11:59 pm (Central European Time).  The call is now closed.

Note for student presenters:  We welcome proposals from graduate students. If your paper is accepted for a paper session or a symposium, you will be eligible for the Robert Lado Memorial Award for Best Graduate Student Paper, which is awarded at the end of the conference. Proposals co-authored with faculty members are not eligible.
