With more than 15 student presentations on the schedule this year, the members of the LADO committee had a formidable task. They were uniformly impressed by the quality of the student work they were privileged to observe.

The winner of the Robert Lado Memorial Award for the best student paper at LTRC Atlanta is Christine Marie Barron (OISE, University of Toronto), for her presentation “Reading self-concept and reading achievement in monolingual and multilingual students: A cross-panel multiple-group SEM analysis.” Christie presented a complex study (based on her Master’s work) in an accessible and thought-provoking manner, discussing her results through three different theoretical lenses. The committee was impressed not only by the rigour and implications of the study itself but by Christie’s assured presentation style.

In addition to the award winner, the committee felt that two other student presentations were worthy of a special mention:

  • Stephen O’Connell of the University of Wisconsin, Madison, for his masterful presentation of his study “Item-level analyses of a listening for implicature test: Evidence against an implicature subskill construct?”
  • Natalia de Andrade Raymundo of the University of Campinas/Brazilian Air Force, for her timely and important study “Analysing stakeholders’ voices in the aviation context: A glocal perspective.”

The committee congratulates these and all the other student presenters, and their supervisors, for their contributions to the field and to LTRC.
