We are pleased to announce that this year’s winner of the Robert Lado Memorial Award for the best student paper at LTRC in Auckland 2018 is Fauve De Backer from Ghent University, Belgium, for her paper on “The Effect of Multilingual Assessment on the Science Achievement of Pupils”.

The committee was impressed with the quality of Fauve’s presentation and the significance of work on her presented issue for the field. Her presentation dealt with a topic not often discussed at LTRCs, as it focused not on how different factors might muddy our measurement of language, but rather on how language might be an issue in the measurement of other subjects – a study about language IN testing, rather than purely language testing. The presentation of the impressive large-scale study built on the literature from both language testing as well as educational measurement and used appropriate methodology to answer the well-formed research questions. The presentation was very accessible and clear, and delivered with a calm professional confidence.
