ILTA was able to secure a longer session  of 90 (rather than the previous 45) minutes for our Colleague Association session at TESOL 2018 in Chicago.  We took the opportunity to run a workshop titled The fundamentals of developing writing rubrics.  Diane Schmitt was the session organiser. Deborah Crusan opened the session with a general introduction to writing rubrics and then Sara Cushing took over as workshop leader.  Joyce Kling and Liyeng Cheng acted as workshop facilitators.  The rationale for five ILTA representatives was that the session was scheduled in a ballroom with a capacity for 225.  In the end, we had between 50 and 60 participants.

Workshop participants worked through two tasks.  In the first participants used a range of rubrics to assess a sample of writing and in the second,  participants developed their own EBB scale from a sample of student responses to a task.

The workshop was very well received.  Participants expressed interest in the following topics which could be the focus of future ILTA/TESOL events:

Rubrics for speaking

Using rubrics to develop students' peer and self-assessment skills

Standardisation and rater reliability training

Rubric writing for specific purposes
