BAAL TEA SIG is holding a one-day annual conference on the theme of 'exploring the relationship between language assessment and second language acquisition (SLA) research' at the University of London (UCL) on Friday, 29 March 2019.

A rise in cross-disciplinary approaches has reinforced the need for language assessment to take account of relevant findings in SLA research and to consider applications across other fields. Important issues such as how we might assess acquisition and any implications for test development and validation were discussed in Bachman and Cohen’s (1998) seminal volume entitled Interfaces between second language acquisition and language testing research but this research remains under-represented.

The BAAL TEASIG invites proposals for this event related to the main theme and covering one or more of the sub-themes below. These sub-themes are intended to capture major areas of interest but are not intended as an exhaustive list. Proposals on other aspects of the main theme of exploring the relationship between language assessment and second language acquisition are also welcome.

· Making connections between language assessment and second language acquisition
· Measuring second language development and proficiency: relationships and differences
· Measuring the cognitive processes underlying language use
· Measuring constructs in current SLA theories
· Exploring links between rating scales and second language development research
· How assessment might capture multiple conceptions of language proficiency
· How assessment can reflect the dynamic nature of communicative language proficiency
· How SLA research might inform the collection of validity evidence for language tests

We hope to build on the successful TEA SIG events over recent years, and encourage researchers and practitioners to attend and share ideas and experiences.
