r. Szilvia Papp and Dr. Aylin Ünaldı are offering a five-day workshop on the assessment of primary and middle school students’ English as a foreign language. The workshop is designed to support language teachers’ assessment literacy to help them to gain expertise in developing suitable test materials and selecting standardised tests that will have beneficial impact on students’ learning.

ASSESSMENT of YOUNG LEARNERS (June 19-23, 2017) Istanbul TURKEY

A practical course in test development and evaluation

Dr. Szilvia Papp and Dr. Aylin Ünaldı are offering a five-day workshop on the assessment of primary and middle school students’ English as a foreign language. The workshop is designed to support language teachers’ assessment literacy to help them to gain expertise in developing suitable test materials and selecting standardised tests that will have beneficial impact on students’ learning.
The workshop will focus on:
General principles of language assessment
Learner characteristics of children and teenagers
Test taker characteristics of children and teenagers
Literacy development
Task development for testing foreign language skills
Test evaluation

The participants will be given a certificate of achievement by Boğaziçi University. We are also hoping to form a network of teachers specialising on the assessment of young learners’ foreign language within the testing community in Turkey , and maintain our professional relationship in the future, too.
This workshop is sponsored by the International Language Testing Association.

Bio-data of the workshop trainers

Szilvia Papp holds a BA in English and Russian Studies from the Teacher Training College at the University of Szeged, Hungary, where she was a teacher trainer. She also holds an MSc in Applied Linguistics and a PhD in Second Language Acquisition from Edinburgh University. Currently, she is a consultant in educational assessment, developing and working on a new MA in Educational Assessment and Examinations offered by the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education. Previously she worked as Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics at Portsmouth University (1999-2007) and Senior Research and Validation Manager at Cambridge English Language Assessment working on the Cambridge English Young Learners tests and for Schools examinations (2007-2015). Her current research focuses on the validity of language tests for children and adolescents.

Aylin Ünaldı holds PhDs in Language Testing from Boğaziçi University (Turkey) and University of Bedfordshire (UK). Previously, she was involved in the development and supervising the development of tests and rating scales, test validation studies and rating standardization. Currently, she teaches at the Department of Foreign Language Education of Boğaziçi University at undergraduate and post-graduate levels, and works as a consultant in language assessment to schools and universities. Her main interests are teaching and assessment of writing and reading at textual and inter-textual levels.

Course is limited to 20 applicants.
